Can I use my old fall protection equipment on a new job site?
Job sites vary, and your old fall protection might not be suitable for new hazards. Welding or electrical work, for instance, requires specialized gear. Even if versatile, equipment must match specific job needs (anchorage, clearance, etc.). Always consult a qualified professional to ensure you have the right, safe equipment. Saving money on proper gear is never worth the risk.
What are fall clearance and swing fall?
Fall clearance is the minimum vertical distance needed to safely stop a fall and avoid hitting the ground or obstacles. It’s not just distance to the ground; it includes deceleration, worker height, and lanyard/SRL type. Insufficient clearance means your fall arrest system won’t protect you.
Swing fall is a pendulum-like motion when falling away from the anchorage point, not directly below it. This increases the fall distance, requiring adjusted clearances.
How do I calculate fall clearance?
Fall clearance is the distance needed to avoid impact during a fall. For energy-absorbing lanyards, use: lanyard length + deceleration distance + worker height + 1.5-foot safety factor. If this exceeds the distance to obstacles, your system is inadequate. Swing falls need adjusted calculations. Charts and formulas are available for SRLs and other systems.
Can I attach my fall protection to scaffolding?
Yes, if the scaffold is rated for the load and the manufacturer approves it. Use hooks that properly close and lock on scaffolding (e.g., rebar hooks). Ensure your hooks are approved for that orientation.
At what height is fall protection required?
Canadian fall protection requirements are governed by provincial and territorial regulations. In Ontario, for example, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations outline specific requirements for fall protection in various industries. While there isn’t a single “trigger height” that applies to all situations, regulations specify when fall protection is required based on the nature of the work and potential fall hazards. It’s crucial to consult the specific regulations applicable to your industry and province to ensure compliance. For example, in Ontario, the Construction Regulations under the OHSA generally require fall protection at heights of 3 meters (10 feet) or more, or where there is a risk of falling from a lesser height to a hazard. Always refer to the relevant legislation for accurate and up-to-date information.
